I've lavished a lot of praise on Amy's Bread in recent posts, but now I have found a potential competitor to their dynasty. After all, Grandaisy Bakery was voted #1 Bread by Zagat 2008...
Grandaisy Bakery, like Amy's Bread, has 3 locations - Tribeca, Soho and the Upper West Side. Between Amy's Bread in Chelsea, West Village and Hell's Kitchen - the two bakeries cover most of Manhattan providing a fresh assortment of breads, sandwiches and desserts.
My friend Jillian suggested the Downtown Tribeca location for our coffee date today. Great job Jill! Arriving at half past 4, we settled in for a long chat accompanied with lattes and a "tortino di cioccolata," or better known as a flourless chocolate cake.
The cake was rich, yet deceptively light due to it's "flourless" quality. The crusty, cakey top was the highlight providing the perfect complement to the rich and moist center. A little on the overly sweet side - but what do you expect from a chocolate cake? There was some debate between us about whether it contained honey - but that may be secret kept by the bakers of Grandaisy.
Match it with a latte - I took mine with no sugar added...and the bitterness adds just the right balance with the dessert.
As an added bonus the employees gave us a complimentary loaf of our bread of choice at closing time. Tip - often bakeries and shops like Dean & Deluca will give out leftover pasteries at closing time. Great way to stock up on treats or a gift for your honey on your way home from work.
