So after trying to get to Bi-Rite all week, to my delight, my friend Faya suggested we finish off our two desserts at Citizen Cake with a stop at Bi-Rite Creamery - handcrafted ice cream from organic ingredients, materials, you know the drill - it is San Francisco....
Yay!!! I had been trying to get there all week, but it never had seemed to work out.
After circling for maybe 20 minutes around the Mission District looking for parking at 10:45pm on a Saturday night...no easy feat - we were finally victorious! Whoo hoo!
15 minutes before close, no less = no line! Maybe this was an abnormality, but I'll take it! Since there was no line, the servers were super nice and let us try just about everything. Yay again for flavors like Honey Lavender, Salted Caramel and Creme Fraiche. Delish.
As a suggestion from Faya who had seen it on Food Network's Best Thing I've Ever Ate, I had to go with Sam's Sundae.
This is a bowl of chocolate ice cream, olive oil and sea salt. Sound weird to you? Maybe. Not so weird to me after having tried and loved the olive oil gelato at Otto.
The sea salt goes along with the increasing trend of salty/sweet desserts and ice creams...i.e., the salted caramel and salted hazelnut craze I've been seeing more often?
The salt definitely brings out the flavor of the chocolate, giving it a richer texture and complexity. The olive oil balances out the sweetness as well with a little base. Definitely not for everyone - but worth a try for almost everyone...
If you aren't up for that...the coffee sundae sure looked good....
